Snowball Fight Game: A Team Event for Companies

How is a snowball fight played at a company event? Team rules, safety, a clothing checklist and ways to build the snowball fight into a winter programme.

A snowball fight game is a winter team activity in which two or more teams score points by throwing snowballs within set rules. In the company version, the aim is less about hitting opponents and more about the team building a strategy, sharing roles and laughing together.

For teams gathering at a ski resort or a snowy mountain hotel, it is the fastest ice breaker: it needs no equipment, the rules take a minute to explain and everyone is in the game from the first throw.

How is a snowball fight played at a company event?

As the video shows, we place coloured markers in the snow to set the team lines and throwing lines. Teams line up facing each other, the round starts on the game leader's signal and points are counted when time is up. Before the game, teams receive task cards that state the goal of the round and any special rules.

  • Target practice: the team that knocks down the most coloured targets set in the snow wins.
  • Defend the fort: each team guards a flag or marker in its own zone, which must be knocked down without crossing into the opponent's zone.
  • Snowball relay: snowballs are passed hand to hand to the target, and a ball that falls apart on the way has to be remade.
  • Last team standing: a player who is hit does not sit out but joins their team's snowball production crew.

Snowball fight rules: how is safety ensured?

  1. Balls are made only from soft, fresh snow; no ice or tightly packed hard balls.
  2. No throwing at the head or face; targets are the body and the markers on the ground.
  3. The throwing line is not crossed and a safe distance is kept between teams.
  4. Snow goggles are recommended for participants who wear glasses, and anyone who prefers can take a jury or referee role.
  5. Each round is kept short, with warm-up breaks between rounds.

How should you prepare for a snowball fight?

We remind participants in advance to come with a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat and non-slip boots. When choosing the area, we prefer flat, sunny snow near the venue and away from vehicle traffic. A hot drink break at the end is an essential part of the programme.

Which winter activities can you combine with a snowball fight?

A snowball fight on its own is a short, intense game, so we usually use it to open a winter programme. It pairs well with the Sled Race & Triathlon, where teams build and race their own sleds, and with the Snow Globe & Ice Sculpture Workshop for a calmer finish.
