How Does a Perfume Workshop Work? A Step-by-Step Corporate Guide

How does a perfume workshop work and what materials does it use? The flow, timing, audience and cost factors of a corporate perfume workshop.

A perfume workshop is a hands-on session where participants, guided by a perfumer, get to know essences, blend them into their own fragrance, bottle it and take it home. At a corporate event it brings a team together around the table, and everyone leaves with a gift that carries their own signature.

In the video below you can see a workshop we set up for a company: the instructor opens with a short talk, then participants prepare their own blends at round tables with droppers, measuring vessels and spray bottles.

How does a perfume workshop work? Step by step

The perfume programme within our Makeup Secrets & Perfume Workshop is led by expert perfumers. The flow we set up for a corporate workshop usually follows this order:

  1. Opening and story: the perfumer briefly explains the history of perfume and the stages a fragrance goes through in production.
  2. Getting to know the scents: the essences on the table are smelled one by one on blotter strips, and participants note which ones they like and dislike.
  3. Formula: everyone sets their own ratios, and the essences are blended step by step with droppers and measuring vessels.
  4. Bottling: the blend is completed with perfumer's alcohol and filled into a spray bottle.
  5. Name and label: each participant names their perfume, the bottle gets a personalised label and goes home as a gift.

What materials are used to make perfume?

The basic components of perfume are essences (natural or synthetic fragrance materials), perfumer's alcohol as the carrier and sometimes a small amount of purified water. Perfumery uses ethyl alcohol denatured for cosmetic use so that it is not drinkable. On the equipment side, droppers, measuring vessels, blotter strips and bottles are enough. For corporate workshops we bring all the materials and equipment; participants only need to trust their nose.

Who is a corporate perfume workshop right for?

It works well for Women's Day programmes, customer and dealer gatherings, team rewards and launches. It is a calm, focused workshop that invites conversation; colleagues trying each other's scents at the table bond naturally. Since it requires no physical effort, participants of all ages can join comfortably. The programme can run on its own or back-to-back with the makeup workshop in the same event flow.

The main cost factors are the number of participants, the length of the programme, the range of essences used, brand personalisation on the bottle and label design, and the city where the event takes place.

If you are looking for a more boutique experience focused on the scent itself, meaning top, heart and base notes, see our bespoke perfume workshop guide. For other table-based workshop options, our guide to choosing a workshop will help.
