How to Make a Phone Strap: A Workshop Guide for Company Events
How to make a beaded phone strap, which materials you need and how to attach it, plus how we run a phone strap workshop at company events, step by step.

A phone strap workshop is a handmade accessory workshop, completed in about an hour, in which participants design and make their own neck or wrist phone straps from cord, string and beads. Everyone leaves the table with a personal piece they will use all day.
The video shows the workshop we set up in the garden area of a company festival: wooden tables under a gazebo, colourful plastic and wooden beads in wicker baskets, cords on spools and scissors in the middle of the table.
What materials do you need to make a phone strap?
- Cord or string: a strong, non-stretch base line such as paracord, waxed cord or macramé cord.
- Beads: plastic, wooden, glass or letter beads; letter beads can spell out names or initials.
- Phone strap tab: the thin plate that sits between the phone and the case, where the strap is attached.
- Scissors and a measure: to cut the cord to the right length.
- End finishing: a lighter to melt synthetic cord ends (under staff supervision) or a knot and end cap.
How do you make a phone strap? Step by step
- Choose the type: size the cord to your neck for a neck strap, or to a short loop for a wrist strap.
- Cut the cord and finish the ends so it does not fray while you thread the beads.
- Lay out the pattern on the table first: set the colour order and letters, then thread them.
- Thread the beads; knots between them keep the beads from sliding.
- Tie the ends to the tab or a metal ring with a secure knot.
- Final check: pull the knots to test them and trim the excess cord.

How do you attach a phone strap?
With tab-type models, the thin plate goes on the back of the phone, inside the case; the ring the strap is tied to comes out through the charging or bottom opening of the case. Once the case is on, the plate is held in place and the strap can carry the phone. With cases that have a lanyard hole, the cord is simply threaded through the hole and knotted.

How do you run a phone strap workshop at a company event?
Rather than a long programme, this workshop works as a drop-in station at a festival, picnic, family day or year-end celebration. We scale it to large groups by adding tables; with beads in company colours or a logo end piece, the strap becomes a branded keepsake. Pricing depends on the number of participants, how long the station stays open, the city, the choice of materials and brand personalisation. For teams who enjoy working with beads, our Jewelry Design & Glass Workshop, where glass beads are shaped with a master craftsperson, can be a next step; to add an environment-themed station to the same garden, the Seed Bomb Workshop is a good partner.
