What Is Slot Car Racing? A Mini Track Guide for Company Events
What slot car is, how it works and how to run a race at a company event: group size, timing, track setup and what affects slot car hire pricing.

Slot car is a track race with small electric cars guided by a groove (the slot) set into the track, where drivers control only the speed as they lap. There is no steering: the car follows the groove and the driver decides when to accelerate and when to ease off. That simplicity makes it an ideal competitive station for corporate events.
On the Slot Car track we set up at company events, four people race at once, lap times are tracked and large groups move to a tournament bracket. In the video below you can see the chequered track we built in a hotel function room and the drivers in action.
What is slot car racing and how does it work?
Each lane on the track has a groove and two metal rails. A guide under the car sits in the groove and current from the rails drives the motor. The controller in the driver's hand raises or lowers that current. It is simple but takes skill: a car that goes too fast into a bend leaves the groove and loses time. That is why the best lap usually goes to the calmest driver who manages the pace best.
In the setup shown in the video, the drivers sit on exercise bikes lined up right next to the track. In this version speed depends not only on a fingertip but on pedalling rhythm too: fitness and control are tested in the same race, and the scene is far more dynamic for spectators.

How is a slot car race set up at a company event?
- Space: the track is set up at table height with at least one metre of clearance around it for spectators. A hotel function room, foyer, trade fair stand or office lobby works well.
- Warm-up laps: every driver gets a few practice laps; flying off at the first bend happens to almost everyone and breaks the ice immediately.
- Qualifying: lap times are recorded and the fastest drivers go onto the bracket.
- Final: the four-driver final is placed at the close of the event or during a meal break and crowned with a trophy or medals.
- Team score: if you like, individual times are added up for department or regional teams.
How many people can play and how long does it take?
Four people race on the track at a time, but because the station can stay open throughout the event there is no limit on total participants. A race lasts a few minutes, so the queue moves quickly. For all-day formats such as cocktails, dealer meetings, launches or trade fair stands we recommend free play; for motivation days, a scheduled tournament.

What does slot car hire cost depend on?
The main factors behind slot car hire pricing are the duration of the event, track size and number of lanes, extra formats such as the bike-powered version, city and installation conditions, branding on the track skirting and gantry, and the number of staff needed to run the tournament. For a clear quote, just share your date, venue and estimated number of participants.
If you are looking for competitive stations, the simulator setup we used at the company rally in Didim creates a similar race atmosphere.
